Our Unique Preschool Curriculum

Little Butterflies is owned by an Occupational Therapist and staffed with lifelong educators. This makes our curriculum unique, designed in collaboration with both educational and therapeutic best practices. Each lesson plan presents opportunities for emotional, physical, and social growth.

Our curriculum is play-based; it includes age-appropriate learning opportunities, ed themes, and unstructured free play. Age-based classes are held in a sensory-based indoor play area, complete with swings, a climbing structure with a slide, sensory manipulatives, and a quiet, calming room.

What’s an average day at Little Butterflies like?

We build each day with variety of different activities within a core structure, so that there is structure and novelty. Each week has a core structure and theme. This helps create the ideal environment for consistent learning where each child feels safe to explore new ideas and approaches to problems. Here’s an example of what an average week looks like:

Example Weekly Theme: Feelings and Zones of Regulation

Example Week’s Activities:

Monday: Color Monster | Inspired by the children’s book, “Color Monster”, friends will choose a feeling to focus on and create their own Color Monster. This activity will support the understanding of the zones of regulation: Green Zone, Blue Zone, Yellow Zone, and Red Zone.

Tuesday: International Dot Day | Inspired by the children’s book, “The Dot”, Friends will celebrate their creativity, bravery, and new discoveries through art exploration.

Wednesday: Story and Craft Time With Librarian Ms.Dawn

Thursday: Playdough Feelings Expressions | Friends will exercise their fine motor skills and understanding of emotions as they pull, squeeze, pinch, and roll playdough to create different expressions. As they create each feeling, we will talk about how we feel when our bodies are experiencing different emotions and what we do. Green Zone, Blue Zone, Yellow Zone, and Red Zone.

Friday: Breathing Wands | Friends will practice breathing techniques to help their bodies when they are feeling sad, mad, frustrated, or confused. This activity will support emotional regulation and problem-solving skills.
